The Bayside Skillet is a landmark breakfast spot in Ocean City, Maryland, perched on the bay and instantly recognizable for its bold pink exterior. Known as “The Crepe and Omelet Place,” it’s famous for its oversized omelets, fresh-squeezed juices, and indulgent strawberry-filled crepes. With its prime waterfront location and vibrant branding, the restaurant has become a go-to destination for locals and tourists alike.

As the popularity of the restaurant grew, so did the demand for outdoor seating. However, unpredictable coastal weather often limited the use of the patio, threatening revenue during peak tourist season. The Bayside Skillet needed a solution that would not only protect guests from the elements but also reflect the restaurant’s playful, vibrant identity.

I originally reached out to ShadeFX for rain protection, but the retractable roofs quickly became just as valuable for shielding customers from the sun. Guests often preferred sitting under the ShadeFX roofs over our umbrella tables, even on clear days. The system was easy to install, expandable, and impressed me so much that I added three more. To make the most of its patio and ensure comfort for guests in unpredictable coastal weather, ShadeFX delivered two custom 20’x20′ retractable roofing solutions with integrated rain gutters. The powder-coated finish in telemagenta matched the restaurant’s striking look, while Ferrari Celadon fabric offered durability and weather resistance. Guests can now dine outside in comfort, rain or shine, and the restaurant quickly saw the investment pay off.

Encouraged by this success, Phase 2 added a third 20’x20′ retractable roof, expanding the coverage so more tables could remain open in all conditions. Finally, Phase 3 extended the project with two 20′×16′ retractable roofs in another patio section. By maintaining the cohesive design, the restaurant created a seamless outdoor space that maximized seating while staying true to its iconic brand.

The phased transformation not only improved guest comfort but also strengthened the restaurant’s reputation as a must-visit Ocean City destination. The Bayside Skillet invested strategically, balancing design, function, and growth, proving that thoughtful shading solutions can deliver both immediate and lasting benefits.
